Rounders – Crime/Thriller
Rounders – 1998 – Crime/Thriller – 2h 1m
Released in 1998, Rounders is much more than a movie about cards. It is a gritty, fascinating dive into the underground world of high-stakes gambling that shaped pop culture.
The story follows Mike McDermott (Matt Damon), a gifted law student trying to leave his gambling past behind. His plans shatter when his childhood friend, Worm (Edward Norton), gets out of prison with massive mob debts. To save his friend, Mike must return to New York’s smoke-filled, secretive poker rooms.
The contrast between Damon’s disciplined focus and Norton’s chaotic, reckless charm drives the film’s energy. An Iconic Villain: John Malkovich steals every scene as Teddy KGB, a menacing Russian mobster with a famous love for Oreo cookies. The script deeply understands poker psychology, tells, and the thrill of the bluff.
Even if you do not know the rules of Texas Hold’em, Rounders hooks you with sharp dialogue and intense character dynamics. It is a peak-90s cinematic gem that has aged beautifully.
